Anatomy of The Spine
Spinal Fluid

Inside the dural membranes there is fluid referred to as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).  The CSF surrounds the spinal cord, providing protection against physical stress. It also serves to carry glucose and other elements to help maintain the health of the spinal cord and nerve roots.  The CSF serves as an extra shock absorber to protect the spinal cord and nerves.

Diagnostic samples of CSF can provide useful diagnostic information for the evaluation of different conditions such as infectious meningitis, multiple sclerosis, or subarachnoid bleeding.
